Alba: "I didn't renew for Messi, but I hope he stays"

The Spanish left-back spoke on Friday after renewing his deal with the Florida-based franchise, making clear that his contract extension was not contingent on Messi remaining at the club.
"In the end, the renewal is about me. I'm not renewing for anyone else," Alba told reporters. "Of course, I hope Leo stays. I think he's vital for us, and obviously for the club as well."
"But ultimately, I have to look after myself and not others. I understand your concern, and of course, for me too, having Leo stay would be so much better," added the 36-year-old, who also stated that his "dream" is for Inter Miami to be the final stop of his professional career.
Alba renewed his contract on Thursday, extending his stay at Inter Miami until 2027. He joined the MLS side in 2023 alongside Messi and Sergio Busquets, reuniting with former Barcelona teammates. A year later, Luis Suarez also made the move to Florida.
Messi is currently under contract with Inter Miami until the end of the 2025 season, as part of a two-and-a-half-year deal signed upon his arrival.
After managing just one win in their last six matches across MLS and the CONCACAF Champions Cup, Javier Mascherano's Inter Miami will host Orlando City in league action on Sunday.
