Williams defends Ampadu

Ampadu, 18, barged into Dolberg in an aerial duel moments after the Danish forward had been booked for a bad foul on the Chelsea defender. 

The Welshman coolly walked away after the challenge and also received a caution as both sets of players - and managers Ryan Giggs and Aage Hareide - engaged in a heated exchange. 

Williams responded to questions asking if Ampadu acted as a cold assassin, insisting: "I think he got assassinated first and foremost. You can't shove someone into the barrier like that.

"It was brilliant, it was perfect, he didn't lose his head. They were leaving a bit on us we were leaving a bit on them.

"I just think that once you foul somebody so many times and try to influence the ref we're going to do something about it. It was nice to see all the boys sticking up for each other and the young lads looking after themselves."

Williams also stayed positive despite a disappointing end to the Nations League campaign, with Ryan Giggs' side defeated 2-1 by the Danes, who were promoted to Group A.

"These competitive games have been good. No-one really knew what was going on when it was brought in. But it's been worthwhile for us because we're in a bit of a transition with all the new players.

"The last few camps we've got to know each other really well on and off the pitch, and you can see the way the boys are progressing.

"It stands us in good stead to go into the qualifiers. We want to keep as much momentum as we can and try and qualify through that now."
