Why did Man Utd boss Ten Hag opt for Kambwala?

Fans at the London Stadium on Saturday were surprised to hear the Manchester United starting XI. There was one name that didn't ring a bell, that of Willy Kambwala.

Who is Erik ten Hag's big surprise to play against West Ham? The first thing to say is that he was already on the bench against Liverpool at Anfield. Now, just before Christmas, he has made his debut for the Red Devils.

A young French centre-back, just 19 years old, he joined Manchester United in 2020 from Sochaux for a fee of 4 million euros. That's where the Mancunians are starting to talk about the gamble they are taking.

Born in the Democratic Republic of Congo, he was soon recruited by France for their youth teams. In fact, he has even captained France U16.

His time in England did not start well. Kambwala was injured in a friendly match against Salford and was sidelined for 11 months. In September 2021, he was finally able to take his first steps as a Red Devil.

In October 2021, Manchester United decided to sign him on a professional contract, but he had to wait until 2023, against West Ham, to play his first minutes with the first team.

"He's calm, he made a good impression in training. Of course, he's inexperienced, but it's a great moment for him. He's athletic, calm on the ball," Ten Hag told 'TNT Sports' minutes before the game.
