'Welbeck goal would have stood had there been VAR at Wembley'

'La Roja' came from behind to run out 2-1 winners at Wembley, but England looked to have secured themselves a point at the death as substitute Danny Welbeck tapped home after a mistake from visiting goalkeeper David de Gea.
The stopper, much maligned in his homeland, made a mess of collecting a high ball and collided with the Arsenal striker, presenting him with a tap-in to restory parity.
Or at least it should have done, but the match official decided that Welbeck had fouled the Spain goalkeeper, despite it being de Gea who made the move towards Welbeck and initiated contact.
Wiritng in his colum for the 'Daily Mail', Clattenburg hit out at the decision, insisting that it would have been reversed had VAR been in use.
"If VAR had been in use then this would have been referred to a pitchside review and I am sure the referee would have then changed his decision," he insisted.
"The decision to award a free-kick for an apparent foul by Welbeck was wrong because David de Gea lost the ball without the England striker making contact with him.
"The contact came after he'd lost his grip on the ball and it was the fault of the goalkeeper, not Welbeck, that he did so."
