'We spent €400 million and still didn't progress'

Criticism of PSG has flowed from every corner of the globe, with even iconic Italian coach Arrigo Sacchi detailing the qualities missing in the squad's set-up.

It wasn't just the 2-1 defeat to Madrid at the Parc des Princes, but the manner of the overall 5-2 aggregate loss and no one has been more critical than PSG's own player Julian Draxler, who was introduced with 14 minutes to go and the tie already lost.

Speaking to 'ZDF', the Germany international made his feelings very clear: "Madrid played the ball confidently and were not nervous at all. We [just] played the it back and forth, but you cannot win like that. You have to press Madrid when you lose [the first leg] 3-1. Not just make passes and wait for a goal to fall from the sky".

"The goal for 1-1 went in but it did not change anything for us. I felt we needed to keep pressing and playing offensively. We lost a man [when Marco Verratti was sent off] and even though we got it to 1-1, the whole stadium knew the game would not turn around because we didn't have the intensity on the pitch".

Draxler also didn't hold back at criticising his manager Unai Emery, who still believes PSG will win the Champions League one day: "We needed to put pressure on the opponents right from the start. We didn't do that so we deserved to be eliminated".

"In the summer we spent €400m and everyone was talking about how it was going to change things, but we have failed to get through this round again".

It seems that despite investing hugely in the squad last summer through the acquisitions of Neymar and Kylian Mbappe, all euphoria and optimism regarding PSG in the Champions League has been washed away in just 180 minutes by a Real Madrid team who now look like a real danger in the competition.
