PSV managed to beat PEC Zwolle 3-1 in their final game of the season, but at full time they were still unaware they would be champions, having to wait for the full time result in Ajax's 1-1 draw with De Graafschap before they could commence celebrations.

Both teams went into the final day joint on points at the summit o the Eredivisie, but with Ajax on a much greater goal difference, it seemed as though the title would be theirs.

However the Amsterdam club failed to secure maximum points in their last fixture, which handed the title to PSV.
