Petkovic's side shocked everyone when they knocked out favourites France at the quarter-finals. Having gone 1-0 up and missing a penalty, Switzerland suddenly found themselves 3-1 down in the space of 20 minutes. However, late goals from Seferovic and Gavranovic tied the game at 3-3, with the Swiss winning the match 5-4 on penalties.

Switzerland face a Spain side that also had a roller-coaster of a route to the quarters. They defeated Croatia 5-3 after extra-time, thanks to goals from Morata and Oyazarabal in the additional period.
