VIDEO: Bicycle kick goal which won Puskas Award 2023

Every year, 11 goals are initially nominated to choose one of them to be named the best goal of the year and receive the FIFA Puskas Award. Prior to the gala these 11 nominees are whittled down to three finalists, from which the winner is announced at The Best FIFA Football Awards ceremony.

This year the three finalists for the award were Brighton & Hove Albion's Julio Enciso, Botafogo SP's Guilherme Madruga and Sporting Lisbon's Nuno Santos. In the end it was the Brazilian team's defensive midfielder who emerged as the winner after Madruga executed a superb overhead kick from outside the box, which dipped just under the crossbar.
