The arrival of Diego Simeone at the end of 2011 completely changed the fortunes of the 'Colchoneros' in the Champions League, a competition in which they had not usually featured or had gone unnoticed when they had played previously.

However, under the Argentinian coach the Metropolitano outfit have come within seconds of UCL glory. To be more precise, the 'Colchoneros' have played 11 consecutive seasons in Europe's top competition since 2013 and have reached the final on two occasions and the semi-finals on another.

In both the Lisbon and Milan finals in 2013-14 and 2015-16 Atletico were beaten by neighbourhood rivals Real Madrid, who equalised in stoppage time and came from behind in extra time in the former and won the latter in a penalty shootout after Juanfran hit the post from 12 yards.
