Van der Vaart harshly criticises Netherlands after Germany loss

A 63-minute rocket from debutant Jamie Leweling gave Germany a 1-0 win over a limp Netherlands in Munich on Monday and a first appearance in the Nations League knockout rounds.

Speaking to NOS television, former Real Madrid midfielder Rafael Van der Vaart said he felt his national team were "not good in any way" in a match in which he felt "embarrassed".

"I can hardly analyse it. Everything goes wrong," summed up the ex-footballer, for whom Jamie Leweling's opener would have been disallowed after two minutes for offside by Serge Gnabry.

"I think this VAR decision is not correct. Jorrel Hato played the ball intentionally," argued Van der Vaart, who also criticised the performance of Feyenoord midfielder Quinten Timber. "At one point, he gave the ball back to where there was only one German. He looked colour-blind.

"They are all good players at big clubs and have played well below their level. The good news is that it can't get any worse," the former footballer concluded.
