Valencia's Diego Lopez to undergo surgery for facial fracture

Valencia striker Diego Lopez, who left the Mestalla in an ambulance on Saturday, will undergo surgery in the coming days for a fractured left cheekbone suffered in the match against Almeria and will miss several games.

The striker, who will remain in hospital to monitor his clinical progress, fractured the bone after being elbowed by left-back Alex Centelles during the penalty that was later missed by Pepelu and had to leave the pitch on a stretcher.

In fact, the young Valencia striker was substituted after that action and evacuated by ambulance to a hospital in the city, where he remained in hospital overnight, Valencia explained in a statement.

The club said a decision on the "definitive treatment" the player will require would be made on Sunday, although the club said on Sunday that he will require surgery.

The rest of his team-mates will not return to training until 10:30 CET next Tuesday, according to the club's own website, which after Saturday's win is seventh with 35 points, pending the Betis-Getafe game.
