The Manchester United legend that rejected a move to Liverpool

Dutch goalkeeper Edwin Van der Sar is a cult hero among the Manchester United faithful.
The towering Dutchman won four Premier League titles, two League Cups and a Champions League during a six-year stay with the club between 2005 and 2011, setting a number of records along the way and it has now emerged that the 46-year-old turned down the chance to join United's arch-rivals Liverpool earlier in his career.
The opportunity came about when the Dutch international was playing for Ajax in his homeland, where he also claimed four domestic titles and a Champions League.
Speaking to 'FourFourTwo', Van der Sar recalled how he had the chance of moving to either Liverpool or Juventus in 1999 but eventually chose the latter.
The pair had both finished seventh in their respectives leagues that season, but after discussing the move with both clubs, the stopper plumped for the move to Turin.
'When I left Ajax in 1999, I travelled to Liverpool and spoke to (Liverpool manager Gerard) Houllier,' he explained.
'I was shown around Anfield and also met with the chairman and a couple of the players.
'I thought about it, but when Juventus came to the table I came to the conclusion that it would be a bigger challenge to play in Italy.'
Van der Sar spent two years with Juve before moving to Fulham and later Manchester United, where he became the olderst player to win the Premier League and the first goalkeeper to keep 50 clean sheets in the Champions League, amongst other things.
What could have been hey Liverpool fans?
