Sergio Rico gets green light to return to action

Sergio Rico has not taken the field since December 21st, 2022. He did so in a PSG friendly match against QRM in which he replaced Gianluigi Donnarumma for the last 20 minutes of the match. Since then, he returned to his role as a substitute until, on a trip to Seville, he had an accident with a horse that kept him 36 days in the Intensive Care Unit, where he spent almost three weeks in a coma.

The goalkeeper was discharged about seven months ago. There were fears for his life, which it is said that he could have lost if his injury -caused by a step of the animal- had been half a centimeter deeper, but he recovered and, as soon as he began to give interviews, he made it clear that he intended to return to play as soon as possible. According to Guillermo Rai in 'The Athletic', his wish has been granted: PSG's medical staff have given him the green light.

From now on, he will be able to train normally in Luis Enrique's team, who will call him up as soon as he sees him fit if and when he deems it appropriate. The next game on his schedule is the second leg of the Champions League quarter-final against Barcelona in Spain. It may be too early an occasion, although, given the strategist's bold character, it is not out of the question that he will call him up to at least be part of the trip.

For the remainder of the season, Sergio Rico looks set to continue to play a secondary role at PSG, although it will be interesting to see if his coach puts him in his starting XI for a game in the final stretch of the campaign to celebrate his return. The French capital side's last domestic fixture will be on May 25th against Olympique Lyon away from home. The last match at their home stadium will take place on May 11th against Toulouse.
