Saul slams Joao Felix: "Without the work ethic, talent is worthless"

Saul not only criticised Atletico, but also had some pointed remarks for Joao Felix. When questioned about the Portuguese player and his decline after initially showing so much promise, the new Flamengo signing mentioned some bad luck for the former Atletico player, but focused on the footballer's lack of commitment and disinterest as the main reasons for his 'failure'.
"The truth is that he has all the qualities to be an incredible player. And when he has applied himself, he has been an incredible player. I'm talking about in training, not just matches. Seeing him and saying: 'This kid... when he wants to, the b*****d...' He can withstand anything, whether it's Savic's tackles, my tackles... And that's even though he doesn't seem that strong. He's quick, technically incredible, has good finishing...", he said on 'El Partidazo de COPE'.
"Well, with all that, it's not enough. I'm very sorry. No matter how good you are, if you don't work hard, if you're not part of the group... No matter how much quality you have, to play and be the best, football is about the team. I couldn't tell you exactly what Joao has lacked. Perhaps his mindset, perhaps the people around him, the lack of patience at the clubs he's been at...," he added.
Saul also blamed bad luck and high expectations for Joao Felix's situation, and even suggested that perhaps the decisions to change teams may not have been the best. But he insisted on the Portuguese player's willingness: "I heard a quote from Paco Jemez who said that talent without work is nothing. Many of us have tried to help Joao, but if you don't want to...".
