Real Madrid's Mendy set to miss Club World Cup due to quadriceps injury

Ferland Mendy faces another extensive period on the sidelines after his Real Madrid return lasted less than ten minutes. The French defender made his comeback from an injury that kept him out of action for a month in the Copa del Rey final against Barcelona on Saturday.

But he was down nine minutes into the game after attempting a challenge on Jules Kounde, immediately signalling to the Real Madrid bench to be subbed off, as his side went on to lose their third 'Clasico' of the season, with the same Kounde sealing the result at 3-2 after extra-time.

Tests carried out earlier on Tuesday revealed that Mendy sustained a quadriceps rupture, with reports confirming that he is set to be out for two and a half months. This essentially puts an end to the full-back's season, as he will remain unavailable through the Club World Cup in the summer.

The club confirmed the matter with the following statement: "Following tests carried out on Ferland Mendy by the Real Madrid Medical Department, the player has been diagnosed with a rupture of the proximal hamstring of the rectus femoris in the right quadriceps. His progress will be monitored."

The Merengues will also be without Eduardo Camavinga and Antonio Rudiger for the remainder of the 2024725 campaign, Club World Cup included, putting the Spanish side in an extremely difficult position due to Eder Militao and Dani Carvajal's previous absences in defence.
