"Possible" that Rooney has played his last game

Wayne Rooney took sole charge of Derby County for the first time, leaving himself out of the matchday squad, and indicated that he may have played his last game in professional football.

Derby drew 1-1 with Wycombe after conceding a late equaliser when Bloomfield stabbed home an equaliser to that the Rams stayed bottom.

Rooney had been part of a quartet of coaches leading the side but is now in sole charge and has stated that he wants the job full time.

When questioned by media after the game about whether his playing days were over he said: "That possibility is there".

"I have stated I want to do this job and go into management but the focus on Saturday - as the new owners are not in, although it is days away - has to be tomorrow", he continued.

"I am sure in the near future I will be able to answer that in a better way. I will speak to the new owners once it is finalised and see where we go from there."

Rooney is among the favourites to land the role and will certainly remain in charge until the takeover led by Sheikh Khaled bin Zayed Al Nahyan is complete.

He hasn't turned things around as hoped so far at Pride Park though and may need to improve in coming weeks if he is to be named as permanent manager.

In total, Rooney has amassed some 900 appearances, scoring 371 goals for Everton, Manchester United, DC United, Derby County, and of course England.
