Pique's possible replacement to face Barca: Inigo Martinez in the spotlight

Everything seems to indicate that Gerard Pique will not continue at FC Barcelona after mid-2023. His poor performances in recent matches and his contractual situation could decide his departure from the Catalan club.

Despite the fact that the defender has a contract until 2024, the board will try to reach an agreement with his entourage to end his contract one year before it expires. The objective? To get rid of his high salary and reduce the wage bill.

Faced with this situation, the coaching staff and the board began to work together to find a replacement for him. In that sense, according to what 'Sport' reported, the main target is Inigo Martinez.

This Sunday, 23rd October, the 31-year-old defender will visit the Camp Nou for Athletic's La Liga clash with Barça and will be examined first-hand by Xavi Hernandez.

Martinez's contract with the Bilbao outfit expires in mid-2023 and he has not yet reached an agreement to renew. Barcelona will wait until the next summer market to sign him as a free agent.
