OFFICIAL: Switzerland's Yann Sommer confirms his international retirement

Switzerland goalkeeper Yann Sommer is retiring from the Swiss national team after 94 international appearances, the last of which came in the quarter-finals of the last European Championship against England, the player confirmed on social media with a video of his best performances.

"After careful consideration, I have decided to end my career as a goalkeeper for the Swiss national team. It was a great honour and privilege to represent my country in 94 international matches at the highest level for 12 years.

"After another great final round at the Euro 2024 in our neighbouring country Germany, where I previously spent unforgettable years in the Bundesliga, the time has come to say goodbye," Sommer wrote.

"My time with the national team meant a lot to me. I look back with pride and remember the many unforgettable moments, the exciting games, the victories we celebrated together and the challenges we overcame together," said the Inter Milan goalkeeper.

Sommer, who made his debut on 30 May 2012 when he was 23, also showed his gratitude to all the people who have accompanied him over the years.

"I thank all my teammates, all the staff, the coaches and of course my family, my team and the Swiss fans. Without your support, your trust and your faith in me, these successes would not have been possible. You always gave me the motivation to perform to the best of my ability," he added.
