OFFICIAL: Mexico's Carlos Vela hangs up his boots

Mexico's Carlos Vela announced his retirement from professional football on Tuesday after a 19-year career, his last club, Los Angeles FC, said in a statement.
“LAFC legend Carlos Vela, announced his retirement from professional football after a brilliant 19-year career. One of the most decorated players in the history of the MLS League and LAFC's all-time leader in games played (152), minutes (11,194), goals (78) and assists (59), Vela won the Most Valuable Player award in 2019, setting a record by registering the highest mark for goals scored in a season (34),” the U.S. club stressed.
The player himself also issued a statement on his social profiles: “Throughout my career I have experienced very special moments, but the time has come to officially retire from professional football. There are not enough words to express the gratitude I have for my family, all the clubs that gave me the opportunity and the fans for their support and affection. It has been an honor and a privilege to share my career with all of you.
Vela is leaving football at the age of 35 and will continue as an LAFC Ambassador.
“Helping to build LAFC and winning trophies for the club are among the highlights of my career. This club means so much to me and my family, and I am proud of everything we have accomplished together with the incredible fans in Los Angeles. I am excited for this next chapter in my life,” said the Mexican player in a statement provided by the Los Angeles club.
Vela signed a designated player contract with LAFC in August 2017, prior to the Angelenos' inaugural MLS season. He was the first player in the club's history.
His last game for the 'Black and gold' was on October 27th, 2024, when they faced Vancouver in the MLS postseason at BMO Stadium.
“From the beginning, Carlos has been more than just a player, he has been the heartbeat, the captain, and the face of LAFC. Carlos came to Los Angeles with a shared vision of building something special, and he delivered on that promise in so many ways. With unforgettable goals and historic victories, Carlos helped make LAFC what it is today,” said John Thorrington, club co-president.
“While his time on the field for LAFC comes to an end, we are thrilled to announce that Carlos will continue to be a part of the 'Black and Gold' as an official ambassador for the club. In his new role, he will help us grow the LAFC brand, strengthen the connection with our fans and continue to inspire the next generation of players,” he added.
Prior to his time in the United States, where he won the MLS Cup in 2022, Vela played for five other clubs: the now-defunct UDS Salamanca (2006-07), Osasuna (2007-08), Arsenal (2008-10), West Bromwich Albion (2010-11) and Real Sociedad (2011-17). The Mexican, winner of nine titles, has been capped 72 times for 'El Tri', with 19 goals to his name.
