OFFICIAL: Danilo joins Flamengo after parting ways with Juventus

Danilo is back to playing club football in his homeland after spending 13 years in the European leagues. The Brazilian left Santos in 2012 to explore opportunities abroad, playing for Porto, Real Madrid and Manchester City before making his last stop at Juventus. 

The 33-year-old defender arrived at the Turin side from City in a swap deal that saw Joao Cancelo move in the opposite direction in 2019. But after more than five years at the club, Danilo saw himself struggling for minutes on the pitch with the arrival of new manager Thiago Motta at the start of this term.

Having only made 16 appearances this season, the two parties decided it was best to terminate the contract tying them together. "Danilo Luiz da Silva and Juventus have parted ways after five and a half years together, following a mutual termination of the player’s contract," Juventus confirmed on Monday.

The statement from the Italian giants was followed by that of Flamengo, announcing the signing of Danilo. The former 'Bianconeri' captain put pen on a two-year contract with the Brazilian Serie A side, thus becoming their second arrival of the January transfer window.

"Flamengo officially announced on Wednesday (29) the signing of Danilo, who played for Juventus (ITA). The 33-year-old, who has vast experience in European football, has signed a contract until the end of 2026 and is the red-black club's second signing for the 2025 season. He will wear the number 13 shirt," reads a statement from the Brazilian side

The 'Mengaos' have also been relatively busy offloading several players in this winter session as Hugo Souza (Corinthians), Gabriel (Cruzeiro), Fabricio Bruno (Cruzeiro), Petterson (Juventude) and recently David Luiz (Fortaleza) have all left the club this month.

Danilo will look to aid Flamengo in their Club World Cup journey this summer. He will go up against Chelsea, Tunis and Leon in the group stages of the newly revised version of the tournament, which will take place in the United States in July.
