Mbappe becomes first player to lose a 'Clasico' after scoring a hat trick

Kylian Mbappe was one of the main stars of the frenetic 'Clasico' between FC Barcelona and Real Madrid on Sunday. Despite the fact that the 'Merengue' team could not take the 3 points, the French striker put in a superb individual performance, scoring a hat trick that spread panic in Barcelona.

The aforementioned 4-3 defeat tarnished the great game of the Frenchman and, incidentally, led to the Bondy player making double negative history in one of the most important football events: the 'Clasico'... and the World Cup final. Kylian became the first player to score 3 goals in a Barcelona-Madrid match and lose the game, just as he was the first to score 3 goals in the final of a World Cup and leave without the trophy.

At Qatar 2022, Mbappe was the leader of a France side that looked dead for much of the decisive match against Argentina, but a brace from him in a couple of minutes when the game was 2-0 down sent the match into extra time. In it, the Frenchman scored again to level the match 3-3, but the penalty lottery (with Kylian scoring his in the shootout) condemned him. Now, his 3 goals against Barca were not enough to avoid defeat in the decisive 'Clasico' for La Liga. 

3rd Madridista to score a hat-trick at Barcelona

The great disappointment of the Frenchman, who in 2021 had scored 3 goals against Barca with PSG (in a brutal 1-4 win at the Camp Nou), will not be palliated even with the fact that he has achieved some historical records (for the better) in the 'Merengue' team. It will be no consolation for him to have become the third 'Madridista' to score a hat-trick away in hostile territory after Puskas, who achieved it back in 1963 with a much happier ending (1-5 for the Madrid side), and Karim Benzema, who did the same in a 0-4 Copa del Rey win in the 2022-23 season.

In addition, Mbappe's scored the first La Liga hat trick for Real Madrid in a 'Clasico' in the 21st century, the last one having been scored by Ivan Zamorano in the iconic 5-0 win over the 'Cules' in the now distant 1994-95 season, in which they were champions.

Finally, Kylian's hat-trick makes him the 13th player to do it in a 'Clasico' with Real Madrid in history, after Bernabeu, Belaunde, Lazcano (twice), Sañudo, Barinaga, Pruden, Narro, Puskas (also twice), Amancio, Zamorano, Benzema and Vinicius, who was the last to do it in January 2024.
