Mansfield Town's Lucas Akins jailed over cyclist's death

The 36-year-old appeared at Leeds Crown Court, where he received a 14-month custodial sentence for causing death by careless driving.
The incident took place in March 2022, when Akins' Mercedes struck 33-year-old cyclist Adrian Daniel in Huddersfield. The cyclist tragically succumbed to his injuries ten days later.
Judge Alex Menary, who presided over the case, acknowledged that while Akins was unlikely to reoffend, the severity of the offence required an immediate custodial sentence.
"You are clearly not someone who poses a continued risk to the public," the judge stated. "Nevertheless, the seriousness of the outcome necessitates a prison term."
Akins will serve half of his 14-month sentence behind bars before being released on licence. In addition to the prison term, he has also been disqualified from driving for a period of one year.
The sentencing brings to a close a tragic case that has left a lasting impact on the victim's family and community.
