Man Utd receive defensive boost as Maguire and Martinez return to training

Manchester United's defensive options have been bolstered as Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez returned to team training on Wednesday. This development is welcome news for newly appointed head coach Ruben Amorim, who is preparing for his first European match at Old Trafford.

Maguire, who has been sidelined since early October, and Martinez, who withdrew from the Argentina squad during the recent international break, were both absent for Sunday's 1-1 draw at Ipswich Town. While their participation in Thursday's European fixture remains uncertain, their return to training is a positive sign for the squad's depth. 

The session also saw the continued involvement of Luke Shaw and Mason Mount, who both made substitute appearances at the weekend following their own injury layoffs.  Additionally, Kobbie Mainoo and Tyrell Malacia took part in training as they work towards full match fitness after being included in the matchday squad at Ipswich.

However, the defensive situation remains complex, as Jonny Evans, Victor Lindelof, and Leny Yoro were not observed during the media-accessible portion of the training session.

Amorim will be keen to assess Maguire and Martinez's fitness levels as he looks to strengthen United's backline for upcoming challenges. The return of these key defenders could provide the new manager with more tactical flexibility and experience as he seeks to make his mark on the team.
