Real Madrid suffered a huge blow on the eve of the new La Liga season with goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois rupturing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during training on Thursday.
The 31-year-old Belgium international faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines and will undergo surgery in the coming days, his club said. The Spanish side did not specify how long Courtois will be out but reports in Spain suggest he will miss most of the season, if not all of it.
As a result, according to 'Sky Sports', 'Los Blancos' are already looking for his replacement in the summer transfer window. David de Gea, who left Manchester United as a free agent in July, is the main contender to take his place in Carlo Ancelotti's squad for the 2023/24 season.
Madrid could be looking at a great opportunity to sign him as a free agent. The Spanish goalkeeper conceded 190 goals in 545 competitive matches for the Red Devils and could be expected to put in big performances at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium.
Other goalkeepers are also being considered as second-choice goalie Andriy Lunin, Keylor Navas (Paris Saint-Germain), Unai Simon (Athletic), Kepa Arrizabalaga (Chelsea), Yassine Bounou (Sevilla), David Soria (Getafe), Dominik Livakovic (Dinamo Zagreb) and Giorgi Mamardashvili (Valencia).
