Lewandowski to miss Poland Euro opener due to injury

Poland's football federation has confirmed Robert Lewandowski's injury, who will at least miss his team's European Championship opener.

"Robert Lewandowski suffered a torn biceps femoris, which will rule him out of the first match of the tournament. We are doing everything possible to ensure that Robert can play in the second match against Austria," said Jacek Jaroszewski, the national team doctor, in a statement issued by the federation.

The Polish striker had to pull out of Monday's friendly against Turkey after the hour mark. It has now been confirmed that the ailment is now an injury that could keep him out of the European Championship.

Poland play their first match next Sunday, 16th June, and the second match, which will be decisive in their bid to reach the last 16, will be played on 21st June.

It is very difficult for Lewandowski to recover in time to be available for the European tournament. Such an injury usually leaves players 1-2 weeks on the sidelines.

The good news for Poland comes from the other injured players. Both Pawel Dawidowicz, who suffered a quadriceps strain, and Karol Swiderski, with a sprained ankle, should rejoin their team-mates within 3-4 days.
