John Stones - Guardiola's latest invention

After suffering one of his most painful defeats last season against Real Madrid, Guardiola managed to put things right this time round in the Champions League.

City put Madrid back in their place in a game which the Catalan boss was once again the main character due to his latest invention: John Stones' pivot position. The English player, who is a centre-back, played against Real Madrid as a midfielder too.

Guardiola is constantly thinking, and already managed to trick Madrid once in the famous 2-6 win when he played Messi as a false 9. Another one of these changes was seen last Wednesday, but the player in question was a defender.

Stone's position freed up Rodri, helped City dominate the midfield and attracted markers like Kroos and Camavinga, meaning De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva could do their thing down the right. The two were unbelivably free to do so as well.

Despite the ex-Everton man starting his stint at City not as he would have hoped - there were some key errors which cost the side points - Guardiola has always defended him: "He's got more personality than everyone in this room put together".
