"I'm here because of my own merits, not because I know Ancelotti"

Veteran midfielder Casemiro said on Sunday that Brazil must "prioritise" its offensive capacity against Paraguay in next Tuesday's match in Sao Paulo, corresponding to the South American qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup.
The Brazilian footballer stressed that, although Paraguay is known for its defensive solidity, Brazil must improve in attack and be more aggressive in the opponent's half to secure victory.
"They have fast and quality players, but I think that in Brazil we need to prioritise more the offensive part in this game," he assured in a press conference at the training complex of the Corinthians club, where the ‘Selecao’ is preparing for the next match, after the goalless draw against Ecuador.
The current Manchester United midfielder expects that Paraguay will seek to "play the transition", as they did in the first match in Asunción.
Returning to the Brazilian national team after a year and a half of absence, Casemiro talked about his relationship with the new coach, Italian Carlo Ancelotti, whom he has known since his time at Real Madrid and is one of his closest men.
The midfielder highlighted the tranquility and confidence that the Italian coach has transmitted to the group, stressing his humble and direct style. "Ancelotti has a lot of experience and transmits peace," he said.
As for his performance, Casemiro did not hide the fact that last season was of great relevance for him, both personally and professionally.
After a period of uncertainty, the Brazilian returned to shine at Manchester United and is now looking to repeat that level in the national team.
"This has been one of the most important years of my career. Despite not having played so much, I never stopped working and that allowed me to come back stronger," he noted.
"Hard work always pays off, and now I'm here, not because I know the coach, but because of my own merits," added Casemiro, who was optimistic about the future of the national team ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
