Gabigol suspended for two years for attempting to deceive anti-doping control

The Sports Anti-Doping Court on Monday decided to suspend Gabigol for 2 years, accused of attempted fraud in a doping control that was carried out on April 8, 2023. That is the information from 'Globo Esporte', which points out that the vote during the trial was close: 5 votes in favour to 4 against.

The player was found guilty of violating article 122 of the Brazilian Anti-Doping Code, which details "fraud or attempted fraud of any part of the testing process". The sanction runs from the moment he put obstacles in the way of undergoing the tests - it is now almost a year old - and will end on 8 April 2025, at which point he will be eligible to play football again.

The Brazilian newspaper reports that Gabigol's defence, which brought Paolo Guerrero's case before FIFA when he was sanctioned for doping, will appeal the sentence. Flamengo, his club, stated the matter and made it very clear that it will help the player file an appeal with CAS, "as it understands that there was no deceit of any kind".

"The Clube de Regatas do Flamengo, after knowing the result of the trial of its athlete Gabriel Barbosa, in which he was suspended for 2 years until April 2025, by 5 votes in favour of conviction and 4 in favour of acquittal, wants to publicly express its surprise at this decision and that it will help the athlete to present an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), as it considers that there was no deceit of any kind, not even an attempt, to justify the punishment imposed", communicated the Rio de Janeiro entity.
