Following England's 2-1 loss to Iceland in the last 16 of Euro 2016, the English FA want to discuss the possibility of having a winter break in the Premier League.
One common argument to England's failures in major tournaments is that the players are simply too tired once it gets to the end of a season and that a break over Christmas would benefit the team.
There are only five European nations that do not have winter breaks, of which four are in the United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland). The only other country is Isreal.
Therefore, the English FA think that the solution to the problem would be to have a winter break in order for the players to recharge their batteries in the middle of the season. While this seems logical - most other countries do it - it would receive a mixed reaction.
While a break does appear beneficial to players' form in major tournaments, festive football is something that many English football fans look forward to every season. For a lot of fans, there is nothing better than having three or four games in a week and being able to watch as much football as possible. It also comes down to the club vs country argument. Are the English that passionate about the national team? It would be interesting to see what fans thought.
It all comes down to what is more important to the FA, enjoyment for the fans or success for the national team?
