Everton's Doucoure suffers racist abuse by Liverpool fans in Merseyside derby

The Merseyside derby at Goodison Park provided a dramatic spectacle with Tarkowski netting a last-gasp goal to hand Everton a 2-2 draw against Liverpool on Wednesday night. But the Toffees celebrations resulted in an altercation between Curtis Jones and Abdoulaye Doucoure, who was accused of provoking the Reds supporters.

The Everton midfielder was racially abused by the away fans after both he and the Liverpool player were shown red cards by referee Micheal Oliver. Liverpool and Everton have released a joint statement condemning the abuse suffered by Doucoure and confirmed that an investigation has been launched to identify the perpetrators.

A joint statement from both clubs read: "Liverpool FC and Everton FC are aware of – and condemn in the strongest possible terms – racist abuse received by Abdoulaye Doucoure following Wednesday night's Merseyside derby. Such abuse is reprehensible and will not, and should not, be tolerated. Together, the two clubs will work with Merseyside Police, who are conducting an investigation with the aim of identifying the individuals responsible."

Doucoure received further abuse online as several users flooded his recent post with vile monkey, ape and banana emojis. On the matter, the statement added: "We also encourage people who witness or experience online abuse to report and highlight it to the social media platforms on which it appears. We must all, including the social media companies, take a zero-tolerance stance. Platforms need to take accountability and action to ban such abusers. Racism and hate has no place online, in our stadiums or in our communities."
