Dimitar Berbatov pokes fun at Rio Ferdinand's short-lived boxing career

Ferdinand announced the outcome of the British Boxing Board of Control's decision in a statement, he said: ''It is with a heavy heart that I am hanging up my gloves on Betfair's Defender to Contender challenge.''

The former England international also admitted: ''To say I'm disappointed by this decision is an understatement.'' However, it seems that Ferdinand's suffering is a source of much amusement for his former team-mate.

Dimitar Berbatov, the former Manchester United striker, took to social media to poke fun at the situation. He posted a photo on Instagram showing him in a pair of boxing gloves posing in front of a punch bag.

Berbatov accompanied the image with the caption: ''Don't worry Rio Ferdinand, I am taking over''. A comment that is unlikely to soften the blow for Ferdinand as he was forced to retire before ever participating in a fight.
