Cauteruccio joins Libertadores legends with record-breaking brace

Last week, Cauteruccio recorded the fourth-oldest brace in the competition's history. His match-winning double for the Peruvian side not only secured three points, but also pushed Damian Diaz out of fourth place. Diaz had previously claimed that spot earlier in 2024, scoring twice at 37 years and 346 days.
Above Cauteruccio, only three players have scored two goals in a single Libertadores match at an older age. Julio de Souza sits third, having done so for Montevideo Wanderers in 2002 at 38 years and 174 days. Second is Ze Roberto, who bagged a brace for Gremio in 2013, aged 38 years and 243 days.
Topping the list is Paolo Guerrero, who set a new record just last month. The Alianza Lima forward scored twice in a thrilling 3-2 victory over Talleres Cordoba at the age of 41 years and 112 days. Outside the podium, there has been further movement in the ranking in just over a year.
Carlos Bacca has now slipped from sixth to seventh following Cauteruccio's feat. In early April 2024, the Colombian striker – then aged 37 years and 209 days – scored two of Junior's three goals in a group-stage win away to Botafogo.
This recent surge in veteran goalscoring has shaken up a ranking that had remained largely unchanged since Fred joined the list in 2021. The rest of the top 10 were established even earlier: Jose Sand entered it in 2017, Esteban Paredes in 2018, and Oscar Cardozo followed in 2020.
