Casillas agrees to take La Liga matches to the US

Iker Casillas was in favour of taking Spanish football matches to other countries such as the United States. At an event in New York organised by La Liga and ESPN, which has the rights to this competition in the North American country, he assured that it is a matter of "evolution".

"It's a matter of evolution. In the end, the fact that it is already being considered that, for example, La Liga can come to play in the USA seems to me to be an evolution of the competition, something that is positive, something that people are demanding," he claimed.

Casillas said that there are already other tournaments, such as the Spanish Super Cup in Saudi Arabia, which are being played in foreign countries.

"In the end, it's a question of opening your mind a bit, your criteria, and that people agree. I don't think it's bad, as long as there is someone who wants to watch a La Liga match. I think it's something that can be very positive and that above all reinforces the brand in terms of global positioning," he continued.

It emerged this week that La Liga wants to take the 18th-round match between Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, scheduled for December 21 or 22, to the US city of Miami.

The idea of playing a league match outside Spain is not new, having already been tried unsuccessfully in 2018, in a match between Barcelona and Girona, then opposed by FIFA, UEFA and the Spanish Football Federation, which would also have to give the go-ahead on this occasion.
