The former England captain who earnt 130 caps during her international career and captained Great Britain in the 2012 Olympic Games is set to take the helm at Old Trafford for the women's team.
United submitted an application to create a women's squad to compete in the second division next season. The Women's Super League is undergoing a major restructure, and are likely to announce their approval of the bid next Sunday.
Stoney has previously worked under Phil Neville, manager of the England Lionesses and former United star, and was highly praised by his sister, Tracy Neville, the England netball manager on social media.

Manchester United had previously come under scrutiny for not having a women's side, and Phil Neville announced in January that he would open discussions with his former club about the possibility of doing so.
Stoney retired her professional playing career earlier in the year, and all being well, will be heading up the new United side at their Cliff training ground in Salford.
