Belgium legend Vertonghen to retire at season’s end after 18-year career

Jan Vertonghen, 37, confirmed his retirement via Anderlecht’s official website, admitting physical preparation has grown "more difficult" to meet his standards. The defender, who captained Belgium a record 157 times, retired from international duty last year after a 17-year stint.
His club career peaked at Tottenham, where he played 315 matches and starred in their 2019 Champions League final campaign. Injuries have limited him to just five appearances this season for Anderlecht.
Vertonghen acknowledged the emotional weight of his decision, stating, "This is by no means easy, but it is the right one", while pledging to "give his all" in his final 11 games. His career included Eredivisie titles with Ajax, a Primeira Liga win at Benfica, and two Premier League Team of the Year selections.
Tributes have poured in from former teammates, with Spurs notably lauding his "leadership and consistency". The Belgian leaves as one of modern football’s most enduring defenders, with over 720 senior club appearances.
