Atletico dream of Spurs' Cristian Romero to bolster defence

April is approaching, and with just months remaining until the end of the season, teams have already started to decipher their plans for the upcoming summer transfer window. Atletico Madrid have one specific player in mind: Cristian Romero.
According to Matteo Moretto - via 'Relevo' - the 26-year-old defender is highly regarded by head coach Diego Simeone, who is looking to bolster the 'Rojiblancos' defence now that Cesar Azpilicueta is almost certain to leave the club.
Romero is said to be drawn to the idea of joining Atletico, given Spurs' ongoing struggles. Having spent a good chunk of it on the sidelines due to injury, the player sees Simeone's philosophy as compatible with his - the fact that he is Argentine further strengthens the connection.
Formal negotiations are yet to begin between the two sides, but a potential deal for Romero will be extremely difficult to pull off both financially and competitively. Nevertheless, it is understood that Atletico will continue to monitor the player's situation at Tottenham Hotspur.
