Arsenal pushing for Wolves' Cunha amid contract delay

Tension is rising at Wolves. Matheus Cunha's future at the club has been in doubt for some time with the Brazilian having still not extended his contract - expiring in June 2025. The forward has also been involved in some disciplinary problems of late as the Midlands side languishes in 17th in the Premier League.

New manager Vitor Pereira, who arrived last month to replace the sacked Gary O'Neil, has fueled anxiety with strong words on Cunha following Wolves' defeat to Chelsea on Monday night. “I had this conversation in the dressing room,” Pereira said. “He can be frustrated because he wants to win, but everybody in the team wants to win. I don’t like this body language. I want someone as a captain trying to help the team – running, suffering, fighting together. This is something I can understand. Next time, I will not understand."

The situation has prompted speculation over a dramatic exit before the end of the January transfer window as Fabrizio Romano reports that Arsenal are willing to make a significant effort to bring the 25-year-old to north London. It is understood that the Gunners believe the former Atletico Madrid player could be decisive in their quest to conquer the Premier League title. 

Arsenal's ongoing injury woes are also a reason for the interest in Cunha. Mikel Arteta has spoken publicly of the need to reinforce his forward options as talisman Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Jesus' absences have left the Spaniard with Kai Havertz as his only reference upfront. Cunha has been Wolves' standout player this season with 10 goals and 4 assists in 22 appearances for the club.
