Carlo Ancelotti, Real Madrid coach and more than authoritative voice in 'Calcio', spoke about the 'betting case', that is, the investigation of Fagioli of Juventus, Zaniolo of Aston Villa and Sandro Tonali of Newcastle, for breaking rules that could have them sidelined for 3 years. Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said on Monday that the 'betting case' that broke out last week in Italy over the involvement of several footballers in illegal betting is an "individual mistake" and that "implicating the whole of Italian football" seems to him "exaggerated".

Italians Nicolo Fagioli (Juventus), Nicolo Zaniolo (Aston Villa) and Sandro Tonali (Newcastle) are being formally investigated by the Turin Public Prosecutor's Office for having gambled on unauthorised online sites and, if proven to have done so on football matches, which is forbidden at sporting level, the sanction would be a minimum of 3 years on the sidelines.

"It was a serious oversight on the part of the players who have fallen into this system of gambling and need to be treated. On a scientific level, pathological gambling is a disease," he said on the radio programme 'Radio Anch'io Sport'."

"Having said that, for me, it is an individual oversight and to implicate the whole of Italian football seems to me to be a bit exaggerated. Justice will take its course, to me it seems like an oversight by some guys who broke a pretty clear sporting rule: you can't bet. For those who do this, it's very clear. They warn you before every season in every country that it is a forbidden game," he added.

"The responsibility that young footballers have today is different from the one I had. Now, the young footballer has a whole structure behind him, with family members and agents managing his career. For all of them, the responsibility increases. Most of them are serious, professional young people who know very well what rules they have to respect," he said.
