Ameobi hasn't retired just yet

The Nigerian international striker is beloved on Tyneside, having risen through the ranks at the club to play almost 400 times for the 'Toon'.

Since leaving his boyhood club, the striker has had spells at Crystal Palace, Bolton and most recently Notts County in League Two.

Having been released by the club at the end of last season, he has yet to find a new challenge, but is not ready to hangh up his boots yet.

"I made a decision with the family that I wanted to be closer to Newcastle, which obviously limits the clubs you can look for." Ameobi told 'Sky Sports'.

"I've kept myself fit and I haven't retired officially. It would have to be the right club. It's not something I'm actively pursuing but if something came up I'd definitely be ready."
