AEK, Ajax charged by UEFA

After horrific scenes of violence, where smoke bombs and flares were thrown between rival sets of supporters, AEK Athens and Ajax have been formally charged by UEFA. 

Six Ajax fans and three police officers were hospitalised as a result of the clashes inside the Olympic stadium in the Greek capital.

Riot police were also required to seperate rival sets of fans as they clashed before kick off for the Champions League group stage match on Tuesday.

UEFA announced today that it has charged AEK with various offences, including  throwing objects, setting off fireworks, field invasion by supporters, crowd disturbances, insufficient organisation, having an illicit banner and blocking stairways.

Ajax have also been charged, but to a  lesser degree, for throwing objects and setting off fireworks. 

The case is due to be dealt with by the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body on December 13.

Ajax won the match 2-0, which sealed their qualification for the round of 16 phase of the Champions League, for the first time in 12 years. Meanwhile, AEK suffered their fourth consecutive loss in the group stage. 

The Greek club already face UEFA punishments for raising ticket prices ahead of their match with Bayern Munich back in October.
