Alcoyano pull off giant-killing as Real Madrid fall in extra time

Real Madrid were ahead 0-1 at the break in a sleep-inducing first half that saw the Whites dominate possession for 45 minutes and create precious few chances against a defiant Alcoyano defence.  

Militao put the favourites to win ahead with a header at the near post from an expertly placed Marcelo cross. The goal was perhaps one of the only chances the Whites had in the first half after almost falling behind thanks to Alcoyano's missed point-blank header.

The second half as much more promising for Zidane's side but saw chance after chance squandered by Mariano and company, the game seemed destined to peter out to a disappointing 0-1 win for Real Madrid. 

That is until Alcoyano hit one in from close range after a woefully defended corner saw two men left unmarked on the back post to easily beat Lunin on the second keeper's official match debut. 

Just moments before Militao should have been given a penalty at the other end of the pitch but a lack of VAR in the Copa del Rey meant that a rough challenge in the area went unnoticed by the officials.

Alcoyano came to life in extra time as belief grew in their ranks that they could pull off a historic win. They chose the difficult route, however, as they went down to ten men with the scoreboard at 1-1 with only precious few minutes left of extra time.

Then, the unthinkable happened, Juanan scored the winning goal with just five minutes left to play after Alcoyano strung an impressive series of passes together to set the player up at the near post. Real Madrid were left floundering during the attack after otherwise dominating the, now down to ten men, third division team.
