Yamal becomes youngest player to score a brace for Spain

Lamine Yamal continues to amass records. Sometimes we forget how young he is, especially when he takes on responsibilities such as the penalty against France, but the data is always there to remind us of the reality. On Thursday, the striker became the youngest scorer of a brace in the history of the Spanish national team.
The player from Hospitalet, who was already the youngest scorer in 2023, scored twice for the first time with ‘La Roja’ at the age of 17 years and 327 days. With this, he surpassed the record held by Julen Guerrero since June 2th, 1993, when he scored twice against Lithuania on the way to the 1994 World Cup in the USA at 19 and 146. Sergio Ramos, who scored a brace in a 6-0 win by Spain against San Marino in 2005 at 19 and 196, was relegated to third place.
Against France, the Barcelona player made it 3-0 shortly after the start of the second half by scoring a penalty. Having missed against the Netherlands, he redeemed himself by beating Mike Maignan from 11 yards. Later, after Mbappe had pulled one back, Lamine Yamal added a fifth after receiving a lovely ball from Pedro Porro and beating Maignan with a low shot across the face of goal.
Things would eventually go awry as Spain relaxed too much and France made them pay for it with Kolo Muani making it 5-4 in the 93rd minute. "Lamine has made a statement and has shown that he is a candidate for the Ballon d'Or. He is the best player in the world and deserves to win it," said Luis de la Fuente after the match for ‘TVE’.
As we were saying, Lamine Yamal already has a few youth records with the national team. Debutant (16 years and 157 days), starter (16 and 61), scorer (16 years and 257 days), assistant (16 years and 257 days)... We will see if after the brace comes the hat trick. He still has a little more than a year to displace in the history books Juan Errazquin, who scored a hat trick against Switzerland in 1925 at 18 and 344.
