European clubs tipped as favourites for Club World Cup, says Luis Enrique

Speaking to FIFA ahead of the 32-team tournament in the United States, the Spanish coach – whose PSG side are grouped with Atletico Madrid, Seattle Sounders and Botafogo – did not hesitate to name Europe's elite as the most likely winners.
"In principle, I think the favourites will be mainly the European teams. I've no doubt that if South American players stayed in Brazil, Argentina or Uruguay, then American, South American, Central American – even African – sides would have more of a chance," Luis Enrique explained.
"But clearly, European clubs play with an advantage in that sense, because we have the best of Europe, but also the best of Africa, the Americas and Asia."
While acknowledging the unpredictability of football, he maintained that European dominance in terms of resources and player quality makes them more likely to go all the way.
"It stands to reason that the European clubs will be closer to winning this Club World Cup, although football doesn't always follow logic or fairness," he added. "I think we Europeans have more chances – and of course that will annoy everyone who isn't European, but that's just my opinion."
Luis Enrique also underlined PSG's ambition to go all the way in the tournament, which he views as a promising new chapter for the global game.
"We're going to the U.S. with the aim of winning it," he affirmed. "Europe is home to the most competitive leagues and, in theory, the best players. That will certainly have an impact on the tournament."
"But I believe this Club World Cup has the potential to become a major reference point for the future. It's a very attractive prospect."
The former Spain manager, who has experienced World Cups both as a player and a coach at a national level, spoke positively of the opportunity to now represent a club on the global stage.
"I've played at World Cups for my country, and I've coached my national team too. Now I'll be representing France – but this time through a club, and I think it will be very exciting. I'm sure the competition will be very well received."
